No. 2 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Lindenwood For 11th Straight Win

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 2 Lewis men's volleyball out-hit Lindenwood .413 to .198 in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-19) sweep of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foe on Friday (Feb. 27) evening at Neil Carey Arena.

Five Flyers recorded five or more kills as Lewis recorded 34 assists on 36 kills. Senior Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) hit .421 with 10 kills and two aces.

The closest set was the first, with the lead changing three times. The final lead change came at 11-10 on a kill by Petty. It was 22-19 when Lewis closed the set on a 3-0 run. Senior Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) totaled two kills in the three-point spurt to close the game.
 
Game two was all Lewis, with the Flyers forcing Lindenwood to call timeouts at 12-7 and 17-10. Sophomore Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) had kills for points 22, 23 and 25 in the set. Lewis sided out on 13-of-14 opportunities in the second game.

"I thought we sided out great," Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. "We talked about being crisp and clean tonight, trying to take care of the ball on both sides of the net. We did a really good job of that tonight."

Lewis closed the match in set three on an ace by junior Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) on match point.

Schmiegelt had six kills with no errors on eight swings for a .750 attack percentage. He also added four block assists. Walsh recorded six kills and no errors on 10 swings. Senior Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) notched five kills with four digs, three blocks and an ace.

The Flyers out-blocked the Lions 10-2.

Lewis improves to 13-1 and 4-0 in the MIVA. Lindenwood falls to 4-5 and 2-4 in the MIVA. Lewis continues MIVA play on Saturday (Feb. 28) against Quincy. First serve against the Hawks is set for 4 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
