Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) hit .400 with 10 kills, three aces and two digs to help No. 2 Lewis men's volleyball sweep Quincy 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-20) on Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon at Neil Carey Arena.
The Flyers stormed out of the gates with a 13-point win in the opening frame. Petty's serving ignited a 9-0 run in the set. The Flyers defense limited Quincy to a -.235 attack percentage in the frame. For the Flyers, senior
Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) finished with four of his eight kills in the set.
"From the serving line we came out from the get go and put a lot of pressure on (Quincy)," Lewis head coach
Dan Friend said. "Ultimately it put us in position to take care of game one."
The second set had three ties, but Lewis never trailed. It was tied at 16 when three straight Lewis points swung the momentum. Petty notched an ace in the run. Lewis opened a 6-1 lead in the third set and never looked back.
"In game three we were able to put a couple of the other guys in and those guys were able to step up for us and put the match away in three and that's what you want to do going into a break for us," Friend said.
Senior
Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) added five kills and two aces. Lewis out-hit Quincy .387 to .138 with a 6-2 edge in aces.
The Flyers move to 14-1 (5-0 MIVA). Quincy is now 9-8 (3-6 MIVA). Lewis takes a week off for spring break before traveling to No. 1 Loyola on Monday (March 9) for a battle between the top two teams in the country. First serve at Gentile Arena is set for 7 p.m.
