GAME ONE – Ashland 2, Lewis 1Ashland opened the game with a run in the first inning off Lewis starter senior
Phil Warner (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North). It was the only run Warner allowed in two innings. Freshman
Mike Enriquez (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) threw the next four innings, allowing only one hit.
The Flyers' first run of the season came in dramatic fashion when junior right fielder
Austin Mastela (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) blasted a solo home run to left field with two outs in the sixth inning. It tied the score, but not for long. Ashland's Mackenzie Hampshire delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh to put the Eagles ahead 2-1. Lewis went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
Ashland reliever Alex Smith threw 1.1 scoreless innings to get the win and move his record to 1-0. Lewis sophomore
Sam Couch (Bolingbrook, Ill./Joliet Catholic) earned the loss (0-1) after tossing the seventh for the Flyers.
GAME TWO – Lewis 2, Ashland 1The nightcap was the
Ryan Fox (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) show. The freshman, in his collegiate debut, threw a complete-game seven-inning shutout. He allowed five hits, one walk and one run.
Just like in game one, Ashland struck first with a run in inning one. Lewis tied it up in the top of the third on a triple by senior
Kane Lombardo (Forest Park, Ill./Nazareth). His hit scored junior
Joel Rotkvich (Crestwood, Ill./St. Laurence) who led off the inning with a single.
The winning run for the Flyers came around in the sixth. Junior
Kurt Becker (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) opened the frame with a hit by pitch and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by junior
Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North).
The Eagles threatened in the seventh after a leadoff single and a sacrifice placed the tying run in scoring position. However Fox worked a ground ball and a pop up to end the game.
Fox is 1-0. Ashland reliever Mitch Cox earned the loss, he is now 0-1.
"It was good to get one today against a very good Ashland team," Lewis head coach
Tim McDonough said. "Ryan (Fox) was outstanding in game two and we got just enough offense. All of our pitchers threw very well today."
Both Ashland and Lewis are 1-1. Lewis returns to action on Monday (March 2) in a single game against Gannon. First pitch in Florida is set for 1 p.m. CT.
