HTML Box Score / PDF Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Lewis baseball fell 5-2 to Gannon on Monday (March 2) in a game that saw the Flyers leave 14 men on base.

Junior Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North) went 3-for-4 with a double and a hit by pitch. He was involved in both of Lewis' runs. His double scored junior Austin Mastela (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) in the seventh inning. Mastela opened the inning with a single. Collins then came around on an RBI groundout by senior Mark Kornacker (Lemont, Ill./Lemont).

However the pair of runs only made it a 5-2 game after Gannon scored two runs in the third, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Lewis wasn't able to get the big hit when they needed it, stranding two or more runners in an inning six times.

"We are just not stringing anything together offensively right now," Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. "Guys are playing hard and competing. Once we get the offense going we will be fine."

Mastela and junior Joe Sparacio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) each recorded two hits.

Lewis starter freshman Eric Luecht (Lake In The Hills, Ill./Huntley) took the loss after allowing five runs (two earned) in five plus innings. Gannon starter David Cricks picked up the win. He is now 1-0 after six shutout innings. Kyle Cox earned the save for Gannon.

Freshman Dalton Hottle (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) threw a perfect sixth inning with a strikeout for the Flyers. Sophomore Brad Elmore (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) surrendered only two hits and no runs in 2.0 innings of work.

"We've had freshmen throw 17 of the 23 innings we have played down here and they have done very well," McDonough said. "Eric threw well enough to win today and Dalton and Brad were fantastic out of the bullpen."

Gannon improves to 4-3. Lewis falls to 1-2. The Flyers are back in action on Tuesday (March 3) in a doubleheader with Walsh. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT.
