Birmingham, Ala. - The Lewis University women's track and field team turned in its best national performance in almost 15 years, as the Flyers tied for 11th at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Alabama Huntsville, at the Birmingham SportsPlex on Saturday (March 14) evening.
Central Missouri won the overall title with 47 points, while the Flyers (19 points) tied for 11th with Adams State and Angelo State. That is Lewis' best performance as a team since 2001 (6th) and it is the best performance by a team from the Great Lakes Valley Confernece since SIU-Edwardsville was fourth in 2008.
"We competed hard right to the end and almost every athlete outperformed their incoming ranking," Lewis head women's track and field coach
Dana Schwarting said. "It was a team-effort and coming home with an 11th-place finish is huge for our program."
Lewis junior
Chantel Stennis (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook), a two-time NCAA Outdoor All-American, picked up her first Indoor All-America accolade on Saturday. Stennis placed fourth overall in the 400-meter dash with a school-record time of 54.54, breaking her previous standard of 54.83 set earlier this season.
"Chantel looked great today," Schwarting said. "Her experience really paid off as she ran a very controlled race."
Lewis sophomore
Amanda Farrough (South Bend, Ind./Clay), a 2013 NCAA Cross Country All-American, earned her first track All-America accolade. Farrough finished fifth overall in the 3,000-meter run (9:36.32), breaking her previous school-record mark of 9:41.24.
"Amanda came in ranked out of the Top 10, but took out all of her DMR frustrations and earned her first All-America award," Schwarting said.
Lewis returns to action on March 20th, as the Flyers head to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to participate in the Alabama Relays.
