Lewis Baseball Falls To William Jewell 3-2 and 5-1

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Two seventh inning runs in game one by William Jewell helped the Cardinals sweep Lewis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday (March 22) at Brennan Field. The Cardinals won game one 3-2 and game two 5-1.

"No question it was a tough weekend for us," Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. "Credit William Jewell for outplaying us in most aspects of the game all weekend. They are a good team."

Lewis tied the score at one in the fourth inning of the seven-inning game on an RBI double by junior Austin Mastela (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport). Lewis chased William Jewell starter Preston Felgate in the inning but reliever Chris Mancha got the Cardinals out of trouble with Mastela being stranded at third.

Senior Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) singled with two outs in the fifth to score junior Cale Robinson (Weldon, Ill./Clinton) to put the Flyers up 2-1. Lewis took this lead into the seventh but the Flyers were unable to hold on. A Jared Patton RBI single tied the score at two. Zach Tyson grounded out to score Patton two batters later for the Cardinals. The Flyers went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh.

Felgate (4-0) threw the final 3.2 innings for William Jewell to get the win. Freshman Ryan Fox (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) started for Lewis. His record is now 2-2 after giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

The Flyers didn't put a run on the board until the ninth when junior Kurt Becker (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) knocked in a run on a ground out.

The Cardinals benefited from the pitching of Billy Kirkpatrick (2-0). The starter went all 9.0 innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits with no walks.

Lewis starter freshman Eric Luecht (Lake In The Hills, Ill./Huntley) saw his record fall to 0-3. The newcomer gave up three runs on six hits in 6.0 innings.

William Jewell pushed across a single tally in the third. It stayed 1-0 until two runs by the Cardinals in the seventh and eighth, respectively.

Freshman Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) and Barajas both had two hits in game two.

"Anytime you only score six runs in four games it's going to be tough to win," McDonough said. "We just have to regroup and get back to playing our brand of baseball. It's still relatively early in the conference season so we have time to get back on track and accomplish our goals."

William Jewell improves to 14-3 (7-1 GLVC). Lewis falls to 6-10 (2-6 GLVC). The Flyers exit GLVC play on Wednesday (March 25) in a non-conference doubleheader at Upper Iowa. First pitch is 1 p.m.
