Belleville, Ill. – The Lewis University men's tennis team downed McKendree University for the 6-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory in an all-around team effort at the Kings Point Sports Club on Friday (March 27).
"We came out strong in doubles and were definitely tested in singles today," Lewis head men's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "We fought hard and toughed it out for the victory."
With the win, Lewis improves to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in GLVC action, while the host Bearcats fall to 12-6 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis' senior duo of
Armand Levandi (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) and
Erik Aunapuu (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) defeated McKendree's Maximilian Ilic and Aleix Alvarez, 8-4. Levandi would also down Ilic 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Aunapuu completed a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 triumph over Sebastian Brueck at No. 2 singles.
Lewis sophomore
Mate Srdanovic (Split, Croatia/Graditeljsko-Geodetska Tehnicka) and freshman
Andre Norasith (Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) earned an 8-3 win over Ben Mueller and Brueck at No. 2 doubles. Srdanovic added a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Alvarez at No. 3 singles.
Rounding out the Flyer victory at No. 6 singles was freshman
Alan Fijalkowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove), completing a 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 comeback win over Dylan Faulkenberg.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (March 28), as they travel to Evansville, Ind., for a 10 AM match against Southern Indiana.
