Lewis Baseball Splits Road Doubleheader at Saint Joseph’s (W 1-0, L 4-1)

RENSSELAER, Ind. – Freshman Ryan Fox (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) extended his scoreless streak to 17.0 innings as he helped Lewis split a Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader at Saint Joseph's on Sunday (April 26) afternoon. The Flyers took game one 1-0 in nine innings of a game originally scheduled for seven innings. Lewis fell in game two 4-1.

Fox threw his second consecutive shutout to improve his record to 5-4. He went all nine innings allowing just six hits and no walks while striking out four Pumas. Three of his four strikeouts came in the final two innings including two in the ninth. His biggest pitch of the game came in the eighth. The Pumas put runners at first and third with one out following a Lewis error. Fox got out of the jam with a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Riley Benner.

"Ryan was great today and has been for a few weeks now," Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. "That was a huge win for us."

Freshman Ethan Bloom (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) led the top of the ninth off with a single. He was lifted for a pinch runner when freshman Sam Cybulski (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Lyons Township) came in. Cybulski was sacrificed over to second and then went to third on an infield hit by freshman Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./Minooka). Cybulski scored the eventual winning run when a ball off the bat of junior Joe Sparacio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) was misplayed in right field.

Keegan Long suffered the loss for Saint Joseph's. he gave up the lone run in 8.1 innings of work.

Tyrell had a triple and a single for the Flyers in the game.

Game Two – Saint Joseph's 4, Lewis 1 (HTML Box Score / PDF Box Score)
Saint Joseph's made three first inning runs stand up. Freshman Dalton Hottle (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) allowed four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work. His record is now 1-3 after the loss. The Lewis bullpen threw the final 3.2 innings, allowing just a hit and no runs.

Lewis' only run came in the sixth. Junior Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North) tripled to start the inning and came around on a RBI ground out by senior Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth).

Jake Harper (1-3) went all seven innings for the win.

Per league rule, the second game was shortened to seven innings after game one went nine innings.

Collins finished with a pair of hits for the Flyers.

Saint Joseph's is now 21-21-1 (15-16-1 GLVC). Lewis is 21-21 (15-17 GLVC).
 
The Flyers return to action on Tuesday (April 28) in a non-conference contest vs. Grand Valley State scheduled for 4 p.m. at Brennan Field.
