PDF BoxROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 13 Lewis men's volleyball out-blocked Erskine 14.5-2.5 to out-hit the Flying Fleet .413 to -.013 in a 25-21, 25-14, 25-17 victory on Saturday (Jan. 23) at Neil Carey Arena.
"The block showed up tonight which was good to see," Lewis head coach
Dan Friend said. "I thought we did some nice things at the net."
Junior
Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) had 10 blocks (one solo) to lead Lewis. He also added two kills and an ace.
Offensively, junior
Trevor Weiskircher (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) hit .818 with nine kills on 11 swings. He didn't have an attack error in either match this weekend. Senior
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) had a kill on all seven of his attempts. He also had three blocks and two aces.
Lewis never trailed in the second and third sets. In the first set, it was tied at 16 when Lewis earned some breathing room with a 5-2 run to go up 21-18. It was 22-21 when Lewis scored the final three points. Freshman
Michael Simmons (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) had a kill and a block assist in the final flurry.
"I thought we came out a little slow but responded well," Friend said. "Games two and three we did a nice job of stepping on the gas."
The Flyers improve to 5-3 while Erskine falls to 1-3. Lewis opens Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play on Friday (Jan. 29) at Neil Carey Arena when Grand Canyon comes to Romeoville. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
