ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 13 Lewis men's volleyball out-hit Grand Canyon .410 to .110 on Friday (Jan. 29) evening in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-21) victory at Neil Carey Arena. The match was the first conference match for both clubs.

Junior Trevor Weiskircher (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) hit .391 with 11 kills and an ace. Freshman Julian Moses (Atlanta, Ga./Atlanta International School) hit .529 with 11 kills and five digs with two aces.

The Flyers put away set one with a 6-0 run midway through the frame to go up 21-12. Senior Patrick Lilly (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) had three aces in the run.

Lewis benefited from a fortunate turn of events in the second set. The scoreboard had Grand Canyon up 24-23 when the Antelopes were called for an illegal substitution. The score reverted to 23-22 in favor of the Flyers. Lewis scored the next two points to win the set.

The home squad finished off the Antelopes in the third with kills by Lilly and Moses for points 24 and 25.

Freshman Jake Walenga (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) recorded 12 digs as the Flyers held a 33-20 edge in digs.

"There were some areas that were really good, block defense and siding out at a pretty good clip," Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. "We struggled with some serve pass stuff off serves but Grand Canyon is a solid team and I'll take that win ever day."

Grand Canyon falls to 5-3 (0-1 MIVA). Lewis improves to 6-3 (1-0 MIVA). The Flyers are back in action on Saturday against Grand Canyon once again. First serve in Romeoville is set for 7 p.m.
