Three Flyers recorded double-digit kills. Freshman
Julian Moses (Atlanta, Ga./Atlanta International School) pounded down 17 kills on a .517 attack percentage with only two errors. Junior
Trevor Weiskircher (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) hit .414 with 16 terminations. Freshman
Mitch Perinar (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) totaled 12 kills with one error on a .458 hitting mark. He also notched eight digs.
"Both times we've played McKendree this year our pin hitters have been really good," Lewis head coach
Dan Friend said.
The most drama came in the third set. Trying to close it out in three, the Flyers came out of intermission ice cold as McKendree grabbed leads of 3-0, 15-8 and eventually 20-12. Lewis wouldn't win the set, but it wasn't for a lack of effort. The Flyers scored six straight points to get within one at 20-19. Lewis would tie it up, but not until 24 all after rejecting a pair of McKendree set points. The Flyers earned match point at 25-24, but it was their only serve to win the match. The Bearcats eventually won the frame on their fifth set point.
The momentum the Flyers found to comeback in the third set continued in the fourth. The Flyers were down 5-4 before scoring six straight points. Lewis recorded three straight blocks in the run that gave Lewis control of the set and the match.
"This was a good road conference win against a team that doesn't go away easily," Friend said. "We almost had the comeback in the third, but I was glad we took care of business in the fourth."
Lewis held a 35-23 edge in digs with freshman
Jake Walenga (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) recording 10 of them.
McKendree falls to 3-5 (3-4 MIVA). Lewis improves to 11-7 (6-4 MIVA). The Flyers are back at it March 5 at Ohio State.
