PDF BoxLONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 13 Lewis men's volleyball saw their rally come up short in a 3-2 (25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 20-25, 15-13) loss to No. 14 UC Irvine on Saturday (March 12). The match was played at Long Beach State as part of the Asics Invitational.
Three Flyers finished with double-digit kills. Junior
Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) hit .629 with 14 kills and only one error. Freshman
Julian Moses (Atlanta, Ga./Atlanta International School) also had 14 kills. He added three aces and three blocks. Senior
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) pitched in 11 kills.
The Flyers stayed alive in the third set by winning a frame which featured 15 ties and nine lead changes. Moses had back-to-back kills to end the set after UC Irvine tied it at 23.
The fifth set was a back-and-forth affair with 12 ties and six lead changes. Lewis' final lead of the match came at 12-11. Then UC Irvine scored four of the next five points to secure the win.
Lewis out-hit UC Irvine .299 to .273. Senior
Scott Fifer (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had 56 assists with nine digs for the Flyers.
The difference in the match came down to UC Irvine's Michael Saeta. He had 24 kills and five aces.
UC Irvine improves to 7-13. Lewis falls to 11-10. The Flyers return to the court on Wednesday (March 16) in a non-conference contest vs. Princeton. First serve at Neil Carey Arena is set for 7 p.m.
