WESTFIELD, IND. – Lewis never trailed in an 18-11 non-conference victory over Cedarville on Friday (March 18) afternoon. The contest was the first game of the inaugural Midwest Region Crossover Baseball Showcase played at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. The event features teams from the Great Lakes Valley Conference, Great Midwest Athletic Conference and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Flyers scored the most runs in a game since earning a 19-1 win over West Virginia Weselyan on March 4, 2013.

Lewis broke the game open with a four spot in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth to grab a 10-1 lead. Cedarville responded with seven straight runs to make the game closer at 10-8, but the Flyers never gave up the lead. Lewis put the game away with an eight-run eighth inning.

Lewis scored 18 runs with the benefit of only two extra base hits, doubles by senior Austin Mastela (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) and sophomore Sam Cybulski (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Lyons Township). They both knocked in three runs, as did senior Joe Sparacio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central). The patient Flyers benefited from 11 Cedarville walks. Six Flyers had multiple hits.

"Our hitters did a great job all day," Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. "Cedarville kept fighting and made a game it a game but I thought we kept our composure well and didn't panic."

Lewis earned a quality start from freshman Pete Hamot (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South). He went six innings, allowing six runs with only two earned. He walked just one and struckout three. He is now 1-1.

"Pete pitched well and had to pitch around some spotty defense," McDonough said. "I'm happy for him to get his first college win."

Nate Robinson earned the loss for Cedarville. He is now 0-2 after allowing nine runs in 5.0 innings.

The Flyers improve to 8-5. Cedarville falls to 3-7. Lewis returns to action on Saturday with a pair of games at the Midwest Region Crossover Baseball Showcase. Lewis will play Grand Valley State at 9:30 a.m. CT and Kentucky Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m. CT.
