Bradenton, Fla. - Lewis University's
Amber Cook (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) became the second Flyer to win a National Championship this year, as the Grayslake, Ill., native captured the triple jump title at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by IMG Academy, on Friday (May 27).
Cook won the event with a school-record jump of 42'3 1/2" (12.89m), joining teammate
Amanda Farrough (South Bend, Ind./Clay) as the 2016 Flyer National Champions. Farrough won the NCAA Division II Indoor 5,000-meter run title earlier this year.
"Amber has wanted this title since outdoor nationals last season," Lewis head women's track and field coach
Dana Schwarting said. "She dedicated herself over the summer and it has really paid off!"
Cook was not the only All-American in the triple jump, as freshman
Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill./Romeoville) earned her second All-America award. Pulliam, who finished second in the NCAA Indoor Championships in the triple jump, was fifth on Friday with a personal-best jump of 41'2 1/2" (12.56m).Â
"Cierra just keeps getting better," Schwarting said. "I can't believe at the end of a long freshman year she can still jump a PR, but she has a lot of guts.
"I can't wait to get back to work with her next fall and see how high she can climb!"
As a team, Lewis is ninth overall with 14 points, while first place West Texas A&M has picked up 25 points.
"We started a little a little slow this weekend, but we have jumped high into the team race, and hope to keep it going tomorrow," Schwarting said.
Lewis senior
Chantel Stennis (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) finished seventh overall in the preliminary heats of the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.07. The finals are scheduled for 7:55 PM ET on Saturday. Stennis is also slated to compete in the 400-meter dash finals at 6:25 PM ET.
Sophomore
Zoe Mead (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) placed 21st in the 800-meter run preliminary heats with a time of 2:14.87 and did not advance to the finals.
Farrough will look for the sweep in the 5,000-meter run as that race is scheduled to begin at 8:30 PM ET.
