Louisville, Ky. - The Lewis University baseball team outhit Bellarmine, 12-11, but the Knights made their hits matter in the 1-0, 5-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over the Flyers at Knights Field on Friday (Apr. 28) afternoon.
With the sweep, Bellarmine improves to 29-15 overall and 16-6 in GLVC action, while the Flyers fall to 12-31 on the campaign and 6-16 in conference play.
Both teams will complete the series on Saturday (Apr. 29) with a 12:30 PM ET doubleheader.
GAME ONE
Bellarmine 1, Lewis 0
WP - Pritchett (4-0); LP - Hamot (1-3)
Bellarmine right fielder Alex Phillips connected for a walk-off, sacrifice fly to break a scoreless tie and give the host Knights the 1-0 win over the Flyers.
Lewis starting pitcher
Pete Hamot (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) was the tough-luck loser for the Flyers, allowing one run and three hits of 8.1 innings of work, while striking out two. Hamot did not allow a hit over the first 5.2 innings, before Phillips laid down a bunt single in the sixth.
Flyer designated hitter
Ethan Bloom (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) topped Lewis offensively with a pair of singles.
GAME TWO
Bellarmine 5, Lewis 3
WP - Spencer (6-4); LP - Couch (4-3)
Bellarmine touched Lewis starting pitcher
Sam Couch (Bolingbrook, Ill./Joliet Catholic) for four runs in the first inning and never looked back, as the Knights claimed the 5-3 win over the Flyers in the nightcap.
Couch surrendered four runs - three earned - and six hits, while striking out one batter in his one inning of work.
Lewis sophomore second baseman
Alex Kiszkowski (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) went 2-for-3 with a RBI double, while senior center fielder
Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North) collected a pair of hits, including a double.
Flyer junior first baseman
Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) drove in two runs, including a RBI triple.
