ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis Flyer softball team opened its spring break trip in Florida with a split on Sunday. The Flyers (4-5) defeated Ferris State 3-2 in the opener and then lost to Assumption 3-2 in the second game.
Game 1 – Lewis 3 Ferris State 2
Lewis scored a pair of runs in the top of the first.
Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) led off with a single, went to third on
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport)'s double to left and then scored on
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist)'s single to center.
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) brought home DeMasi with a ground out to second with the second run.
The Bulldogs (1-4) got a run back in the third inning. With one out Emily Smith singled to center, then stole second and scored on Emily Reed's single to center. Ferris State tied the game in the fourth on an unearned run.
The game remained tied until the seventh.
Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) led off the inning with a single to center.
Alexandra Piatt (Granger, Ind./Penn) came into run for Perna and went to second on a sacrifice from Guske. An error by the shortstop put runners on the corner with one out. Prieto drove in the go-ahead run with a ground out to first.
The Bulldogs put the winning run on base in the bottom half of the inning but
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) got Sam Bates to fly out to right to end the game.
Lewis outhit Ferris State 8-7 with
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) leading the way with two hits. Guske, DeMasi, Prieto, Shaw, Perna and
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) had a hit apiece. Shaw threw a complete game allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits with strikeouts to even her record at 2-2.
Game 2 – Assumption 3 Lewis 2
In the second game on Sunday, the Flyers trailed Assumption 3-0 going into the seventh inning. They loaded the bases with one out in the inning and scored a pair of runs but it wasn't enough.
The Greyhounds (2-0) got on the board first with a solo home run off the bat of Stephanie Menard in the fourth. They added an unearned run in the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth. With two outs in the inning Haley Drakoulakos doubled to right and was run for by Ally Hinojosa. Victoria Petrie singled to drive in Hinojosa.
Perna started the Lewis rally in the seventh with a lead-off single. Guske followed with a single through the right side to bring the tying run to the plate. After a fly out, Prieto singled up the middle to load the bases. Shaw followed with a single to center to score Rylee Poretto, running for Perna, scored to make it 3-1.
Taylor followed with an RBI single to score Guske but Prieto was thrown out at the plate and Shaw was picked off second to end the game.
The Flyers outhit Assumption 9-7 in the game with Prieto, Shaw and Perna recording two hits each.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) took the loss allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and had three strikeouts.
Lewis is back in action on Monday taking on University of the Sciences (Pa.) at 10:30 a.m. (CST) and then will play Nyack College at 1 p.m. (CST).
