ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The eighth ranked Lewis men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to four with a sweep of UC San Diego on Friday night at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers (5-1) hit .308 for the match and were led offensively by
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) with 12 kills while
Connor Pallmann (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) had a career-high eight kills.
Lewis opened the match scoring the first six points but the Tritons (2-3) regrouped after an early timeout to cut the deficit to 9-7 on a kill from Connor Walbrecht. UCSD stayed within a couple of points before the Flyers took command with an 8-2 run to build its largest lead of the set at 19-11 on
Matt Yoshimoto's (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) second service ace of the set.
The Tritons got as close as five before Lewis took the opening set 25-19 on a service error by Xander Jimenez.
UC San Diego scored the first two points of the middle frame but the Flyers answered with a 9-2 run to take a five point advantage on a double block from Yoshimoto and
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS). The Tritons wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the set as
Lewis outscored them 16-6 to win 25-11. Coenen,
Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) and
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) recorded all nine of the Flyer kills in the stanza.
Lewis stormed out of the gates in the third set grabbing a 9-1 lead. UCSD cut the lead to 11-7 thanks to a 6-2 run but wouldn't get any closer than that. The Flyers put the match away with a 13-4 run to build their largest lead of the set at 24-11. The Tritons extended the match briefly before a kill by Moses ended the match.
Lewis hit .433 (15-2-30) in the final set and was led by Coenen with five kills while Pallmann added four and Murray finished with three.
Yoshimoto had 29 assists, eight digs and three aces.
Michael Simmons (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) finished with 11 digs.
The Flyer defense held UC San Diego to .011 attack percentage (25-24-90) and recorded a season-high 15 total blocks in the match. Wyatt Harrison led the Tritons with eight kills while Collin Shannon finished with seven. Walbrecht handed out 14 assists and Ryan Lew finished with nine digs.
Lewis concludes its three-match homestand on Saturday hosting fifth ranked Pepperdine at 7 p.m.
