ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The No. 8 Lewis men's volleyball team extended its home win streak to five with a sweep of Ohio State on Saturday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 20-5 on the season and 11-1 in MIVA play while the Buckeyes fall to 8-18, 3-9 MIVA.
Lewis outhit Ohio State .306-to-.169 using its defensive as a catalyst forcing the Buckeyes to hit into 23 errors while recording seven blocks.
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) led the Flyers with 10 kills and
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) added six kills.
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) finished the match with 25 digs and five service aces.
Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) and
Michael Simmons (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) had four digs apiece. Coenen also had four total blocks in the contest.
The opening set featured nine ties and five lead changes and was a back-and-forth between Jake Hanes and
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin). Hanes had eight in 11 chances while Coenen had seven kills in 13 chances.
Lewis led by as many as three points early but a 6-2 run from Ohio State gave the Buckeyes a 15-14 lead after back-to-back aces from Hanes. OSU extended its lead to 18-16 after a kill from Tyler Alter.
The Flyers answered right back with a 6-1 run to regain its three-point cushion on a kill from Coenen. The Buckeyes trimmed the lead to two on a couple of occasions but Lewis was able to close out the set on a ball handling error on Sanil Thomas and a kill from Murray.
The Flyers raced out to an early three-point lead in the middle stanza and never looked back on its way to the 25-17 victory. Lewis' defense held Ohio State to a negative .037 hitting percentage (10 kills-11 errors-27 total attacks) in the set. The Flyers recorded six kills against three errors in 18 swings in the frame. Moses led the way with two kills.
Lewis scored three straight points to break a 9-9 tie in the third set with two of those points coming on aces from Yoshimoto. The Buckeyes cut the lead to 14-13 on a kill from Hanes but the Flyers countered with a 5-1 run to build a five-point lead.
Ohio State halted the run momentarily on kill from Hanes but Lewis rattled off five of the next seven points to get to match point on a block by Coenen and Murray. A service error extended the match but the Flyers won the match on the next point on a service error by Alter.
Hanes finished with a match-high 16 kills to lead the Buckeyes while Alter and Ethan Talley had five kills apiece. Thomas had a match-high 27 assists and eight digs along with Aaron Samarin who also had eight digs.
Lewis continues its homestand next Friday hosting Quincy at 7 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
