ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team looks to extend its win streak as it travels to Kansas City for a pair of matches this weekend. The Flyers will take on Rockhurst on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and conclude the trip with a game at William Jewell on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
Lewis snapped a four-game winless streak posting back-to-back shutouts last weekend against Truman State and Quincy.
Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg) was named the GLVC's Defensive Player of the Week after posting 10 saves in the two victories.
Race for the GLVC Tournament – With six games to play the Flyers are looked in a tight battle for a spot in the GLVC Tournament. Entering play this weekend they are in a three-way tie for seventh with Missouri S&T and Missouri-St. Louis with 13 points and are two points ahead of Southern Indiana and three points ahead of Rockhurst. Lewis is three points behind Illinois Springfield and Lindenwood for fifth and four points behind Drury for fourth.
Indianapolis and McKendree are currently tied for the top spot with 19 points while Maryville is third with 18 points. The top four teams in the final standings will host a first round contest with the highest remaining seed hosting the semifinals and finals.
League Leaders – The Flyers continue to rank amongst the league leaders in several offensive categories. They lead the league in assists with 25, are second in points with 67 and are fourth in goals with 21.
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) and
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) are tied for fifth in the conference in points with 12 while Baumann is tied for sixth in goals scored with five.
Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) and
Nathaniel Campbell (Palm Bay, Fla./Heritage) are tied for fifth in assists with four.
Doppelhofer is fourth in the conference in save percentage, sixth in goals against average and sixth in saves.
About Rockhurst – The Hawks enter Friday's contest with a record of 4-7-1 overall, are 3-4-1 in the GLVC and have dropped three straight. Last weekend they dropped a 3-1 decision at Southern Indiana and were shutout by McKendree 2-0. Rockhurst has scored 16 goals as a team this season and are led by Chase Klusman and Jacopo Belardo with three goals apiece while Jordan Andrews and Elluan Martins Gomes have tallied two goals each. Fabio D'Errico has played a majority of the minutes in goal and has made 42 saves with a goals against average of 1.51.
About William Jewell – The Cardinals (2-9, 2-7 GLVC) snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 win at Southern Indiana last Sunday. Mikhail McComie leads WJC in scoring with nine points tallying three goals and three assists. In all eight different players have scored for the Cardinals this season. Eli Gratz made 15 saves in the two matches last weekend to up his season total to 69 which is tops in the GLVC.
Series Stuff – Rockhurst leads the all-time series against Lewis 14-8-4 dating back to 1997. The Flyers snapped a five-game losing streak against the Hawks with a 1-0 win last season at Lewis Stadium. Rockhurst has won 10 of the 15 meetings all-time in Kansas City.
Lewis leads the all-time series against William Jewell 5-4-1 and has won three of the last four meetings in the series. The Flyers defeated the Cardinals 3-1 last season at Lewis Stadium. WJC leads the series 3-2-1 in Liberty.
