ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team heads back to the Show-Me State for a pair of matches which includes a match with No. 10 Maryville on Friday (Oct. 29) at noon and at Missouri S&T on Sunday (Oct. 31) at 2:30 p.m. The Flyers enter the final weekend of the regular season with a 9-3-3 record and are 7-3-2 in the GLVC.
Lewis moved up to fifth in this week's GLVC standings with 1.92 points per game and trail Drury who's in fourth with 2.00 points per game. Indianapolis holds the top spot at 2.82 points per contest while Illinois Springfield is second at 2.55 ppg and Maryville sits third with 2.50 points per outing.
The Flyers lead McKendree by 0.23 points for sixth place while Missouri-St. Louis and Lindenwood are tied for seventh 1.58 points per game apiece. Quincy, Missouri S&T and Southern Indiana still have a mathematical chance at making the conference tournament but are on the outside looking in and would need some help.
The top four seeds in the final GLVC standings will host a first round GLVC Tournament game on Sunday, Nov. 7. The highest remaining seed after the first round games are completed will host the semifinals and finals of the conference tournament.
Lewis is also ranked eighth in Super Region Three in the first NCAA Regional Rankings that were released on Wednesday afternoon. The Flyers are one of four GLVC teams ranked in the first of three rankings prior to the selection show on Nov. 15. UIndy holds the top spot in the region while Maryville is second and Illinois Springfield is third. Lewis has played three of the top four teams in the Super Region this season and will play the other on Friday afternoon.
About Maryville – The Saints enter Friday's contest with a record of 12-2-1, are 10-2 in the GLVC and have won eight straight. Maryville extended its winning streak with a pair of shutouts against Southern Indiana and McKendree last weekend.
The Saints have scored 22 goals but conceded only 10 which is second best in the GLVC behind Indianapolis' eight goals allowed. Mirza Hasecic leads the team in scoring with seven goals and two assists for a total of 16 points while Ricardo Andrade has tallied two goals and seven assists for a total of 11 points. Nick Hemann has started two-thirds of the games in goal this season going 8-2 with six shutouts and has a goals against average of 0.50.
About Missouri S&T – The Miners started the season with five wins in their first six contests but have gone winless in their last eight games. Last weekend, S&T lost at top ranked UIndy 4-0 and tied Southern Indiana 3-3. The Miners will host Illinois Springfield on Friday evening before taking on the Flyers on Sunday afternoon.
S&T has scored 16 goals on the season but given up 26. Luan Barbosa, Dario Rossell and Sigurd Semlitsch are tied for the team lead in scoring with six points each. Davis Joseph and Michael Sallee have split time in goal this season with Joseph giving up 16 goals and has a goals against average of 1.81 while Sallee has given up the other 10 goals and has a goals against average of 1.72.
Series Stuff – Friday's contest marks the 11th meeting all-time between Lewis and Maryville with the series tied at five wins apiece. The Flyers snapped the Saints five-game winning streak in the series with a 2-0 win at Lewis Stadium this past April.
Lewis leads the all-time series against S&T 13-7-1 and have won five of the last nine meetings in the series. Last season the Miners defeated the Flyers 3-2 in Romeoville.
