Lewis Men’s Soccer Looks To Bounce Back This Weekend

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team returns home looking to break a four-game winless streak as it hosts Truman State on Friday (Oct. 8) at 3 p.m. and Quincy on Sunday (Oct. 10) at 2:30 p.m. The Flyers enter Friday's contest against Truman State with a record of 4-3-2, 2-3-1 GLVC while the Bulldogs are 0-9, 0-7 GLVC. Quincy enters Friday's match at Illinois Springfield with a mark of 4-5-1 and are 2-4-1 in the GLVC.

Lewis looks to break its four-game winless streak after going 0-3-1 in its last four matches. The Flyers gave up a goal late in the first half in last Friday's contest at Illinois Springfield but tied the game in the 87th minute on a penalty kick by Justin Darlage (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West). The Prairie Stars went onto win the game on a penalty kick in the 88th minute.

League Leaders – Lewis continues to lead the GLVC in several offensive categories including points (57) and assists (21). They are also currently tied for third with Indianapolis with 18 goals scored.

Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) is currently tied for fourth in the league with 11 points while Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) is tied for seventh with 10 points. Baumann is also currently tied for sixth in goals with four. Mwanga is tied for second in assists with five while teammates Jayson Iniguez (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport Township), Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North), and Nathaniel Campbell (Palm Bay, Fla./Heritage) are all tied for eighth with three assists.

Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg) is currently seventh in the GLVC in saves with 29.

Regional Rankings – Lewis was not ranked in this week's United Soccer Coaches Midwest Regional poll. Indianapolis continues to hold the top spot in the region while Maryville moved up to second in the poll and Illinois-Springfield checked in at eight.

About Truman State – The Bulldogs are seeking out their first win of the season this Friday at Lewis Stadium. Truman State is led in scoring by Sam Newton and Collin McDonough, each with a goal for the season.

Goalkeepers for the Bulldogs Justin Olwig and Evan Witte have combined for 34 saves. Olwig with a 70 percent save rate and Witte with a close 68.4 percent.

About Quincy – The Hawks have dropped two straight and are 1-3-1 in their last five contests. Last weekend, Quincy lost to top ranked Indianapolis 2-1 and then was defeated by Southern Indiana 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Jack Rhead leads the team in scoring with five goals and an assist for a total of 11 points while Cole Hayes has 10 points (4g, 2a) and Aubrey Reis is third with nine points (4g, 1a). Christos Kalaitzis and Michele Barletta have split time in goal this season with Kalaitzis posting a goals against average of 1.94 and has made 23 saves while Barletta has a 2.18 GAA and has made nine saves and has posted the team's lone shutout.

Series Stuff – Lewis leads the all-time series against Truman 12-6-1 but, the Bulldogs have always managed to keep the game close, and it will no doubt be a hard-fought game this Friday. The Flyers are 7-2 all time at home.

Lewis is 11-11-2 against Quincy since 1997 but the Hawks have won six of the last 10 contests. Last season the two sides played to a 2-2 draw in Quincy. Lewis has won seven of the last 10 meetings in Romeoville.

Up Next – Lewis travels to Kansas City next weekend for a pair of matches. The Flyers will take on the Hawks from Rockhurst at 7:30 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 15) and will wrap up the weekend against William Jewell on Sunday (Oct. 17) at 2:30 p.m.
