ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's soccer will make its third appearance in the GLVC Tournament in the last four years when it plays at Drury in the opening round on Sunday at noon at Harrison Stadium in Springfield, Mo. The Flyers enter the tournament as the seventh seed while Drury secured the two seed with its wins over Quincy and Illinois Springfield last weekend.
Drury enters the tournament with a record of 12-4-1, 10-3-1 in conference play to achieve their highest finish in the GLVC standings. The Panthers also cracked the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll for the first time since 2009 when they appeared at number 24 on Oct. 19.
Sunday's contest is a rematch of the game at Lewis Stadium on Oct. 22 which was won by Lewis 1-0 on
Miranda Nirchi's (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) goal in the 68th minute. Drury leads the all-time series against the Flyers 10-5-2 but the two sides are 3-3 against each other in the last six contests. The last five matches have been decided by one goal.
Lewis looks to snap a pair of losing streaks on Sunday as it dropped its last two of the regular season and has lost six straight games in the conference tournament dating back to 1997 when they defeated Quincy 3-0 in the opening round of the tournament.
A win on Sunday would give the Flyers their first 10-win season since 2015 and be just the fifth overall in program history.
Sunday's quarterfinal winner will advance to the semifinals to play the winner of number three seed Truman State and sixth-seeded Missouri S&T on Friday, Nov. 12. The semifinals and conference championship will be played at the site of the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinal round.
The other quarterfinal games include top-seeded McKendree hosting number eight seed Missouri-St. Louis and fifth-seeded Southern Indiana at number four seed Indianapolis. All of the quarterfinal games will be held on Sunday, with the semifinals scheduled for Nov. 12 and the championship game is set for Nov. 14.
Tickets will cost five dollars and will be available at the gate. Kids 12 and under will be free of charge.
