ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University women's track and field sophomore
Aliza Van Den Elzen (Hortonville, Wis./Hortonville) won the Pentathlon with 3,209 points at the St. Ambrose Finals Week Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Davenport, Iowa.
Van Den Elzen didn't place lower than third in any of the five events finishing with one first place finish and two second and two third place finishes.
She opened the competition with a third-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.70 seconds to pick up 769 points. Van Den Elzen finished second in her heat behind Katie Goldring who won the event with a time 9.38 seconds and grabbed 832 points.
Van Den Elzen followed it up with a second-place finish in the high jump clearing the bar at 1.56 meters (5'1.25") on her second attempt to pick up 689 points. Goldring won the high jump at 1.59 meters (5'2.5") to pick up and 724 points and extended her lead over Van Den Elzen to 98 points.
Van Den Elzen won her lone event in the Pentathlon in the shot put with a heave of 11.0 meters (36'1.25") to pick up 595 points and overtook Goldring for the lead by 181 points. Goldring finished fourth in the shot with a toss of 6.71 meters (22'0.25").
Van Den Elzen extended her lead with a second-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.09 meters (16'8.5") to pick up 584 points. Goldring took fourth in the event with a jump of 4.95 meters (16'3").
Van Del Ezen entered the final the event, the 800 meters, with a 219-point lead over Goldring. Goldring won the 800 with a time of 2:34.63 to pick up 636 points while Van Den Elzen finished third in a time of 2:40.04 to earn 572 points. However, it wouldn't be enough for Goldring as Van Den Elzen won the Pentathlon by 155 points.
Van Den Elzen finished 49 points shy of picking up a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships which will be held March 11-12 in Pittsburg, Kan.
The Flyers return to the track on Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Sean Brady Alumni Open in Angola, Ind.
