ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University head men's lacrosse coach
Joe Perruzzi announced on Monday (Sept. 13) that he has hired Josh Berey-Wingate to his coaching staff and he will serve as an assistant coach and the defensive coordinator.
"I couldn't be more excited to announce Josh Wingate as our defensive coordinator," Perruzzi said. "Josh brings a vast amount of knowledge and experience to our staff and will make an immediate impact on the defensive side of the ball and with our faceoff unit.
"He is a tireless recruiter and has such a strong work ethic," Perruzzi added. "We are really excited about the impact he will make on our program for years to come."
Wingate comes to Lewis from Benedictine University. He spent the 2020-2021 season as the Defensive and Recruiting coordinator for the Eagles. This season was the most successful in Benedictine's history as it finished with a 13-3 record, a NACC championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament which were all firsts in program history. While at Benedictine, Wingate mentored 10 All-Conference selections and two All-Region selections.
Prior to Benedictine, Wingate began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, University of Dubuque (UD). He served as the offensive and recruiting coordinator for the Spartans while earning his master's degree.
Wingate is a 2017 graduate of Dubuque, where he was a four-year starter as a midfielder. Wingate served as a two-time captain and graduated as all-time leader in faceoff wins as well as ground balls. Wingate finished his playing career second in points for at UD.
He graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education and was a member of the Dean's List. Wingate earned his master's degree from Dubuque in communications in 2020 and is a native of Homewood, Ill.
