ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team wraps up its five-game homestand with visits from McKendree on Friday (Sept. 17) at 7:30 p.m. and against Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday (Sept. 19) at 2:30 p.m. The Flyers are off to an unbeaten start for the second time in three years. In 2019 Lewis started the season 5-0-1.
Last Time Out – The Flyers picked up a pair of wins last weekend defeating Northern Michigan 2-0 in its final non-conference game and then defeated Lindenwood 4-1 in the GLVC opener on Sunday.
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) had a goal in each game while
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) added a goal and an assist.
Dimitri Huitron (Aurora, Ill./Oswego East),
Jayson Iniguez (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport Township) and
Arturs Gorodnickis (Riga, Latvia/Riga) had a goal each for Lewis.
Helping Hand – Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) had a career-high three assists in the Flyers win over Lindenwood. He picked up his first assist on Baumann's goal in the 10th minute, got his second assist on Iniguez's goal in the 21st minute and capped his performance with an assist on Gorodnickis' goal in the 62nd minute.
GLVC POW – Baumann picked up his first career GLVC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award after scoring twice last week in wins over Northern Michigan and Lindenwood. He leads the GLVC in goals with four and points with eight.
United Soccer Coaches Rankings – The Flyers are ranked fourth in this week's United Soccer Coaches Midwest Regional rankings. Lewis is one of five GLVC teams ranked in this week's Top 10. Indianapolis is the top ranked team in the region and is second nationally and are followed by the Flyers, Maryville at five, Illinois Springfield at nine and McKendree at 10. Lewis jumped up three spots in this week's rankings after appearing at number seven last week.
About McKendree – The Bearcats enter Friday night's contest with a record of 1-0-2, 1-0 in the GLVC. They picked up their first win of the season on Sunday defeating Southern Indiana 1-0 in Evansville. James Stone scored the game-winner for McKendree in the 64th minute.
Stone leads the Bearcat attack with two goals this season while Eddie Davis and Philipp Schmidt have a goal apiece. Alvaro Cortazar has played every minute in goal for McKendree and has allowed three goals while making 12 saves and has a goals against average of 0.87.
About Missouri-St. Louis – The Tritons enter Friday's match at Illinois Springfield with a record of 1-2 and are 0-1 in the GLVC. They picked up their first win of the season last Friday defeating Newman 3-2 before falling to the second ranked Greyhounds 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis.
Three different players have scored for UMSL this season with Garrett Bass, Cole Pardo and Gabe Stanislawski accounting for the goals. Jordan Hurt has started two of the three contests in goal and is 1-1 with a 2.00 goals against average and has made four saves in 180 minutes played.
Series Stuff – The all-time series between Lewis and McKendree is tied 4-4-1 with McKendree having won the last three meetings in the series. The Bearcats defeated the Flyers 2-0 this past February in Lebanon, Ill. This is the first meeting in Romeoville between the two sides since Sept. 30, 2016.
Lewis holds a 14-7 lead in the series with Missouri-St. Louis. The two teams split a season ago with the Tritons defeating the Flyers 1-0 in the season opener for both squads in February. Lewis got its revenge in the GLVC Tournament defeating UMSL 2-1 in double overtime on
Jimmy Mwanga's (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) game-winning goal.
Up Next – The Flyers begin a stretch with three games on the road starting next Friday (Sept. 24) at Indianapolis at 6:30 p.m. (CDT). The road trip continues next Sunday (Sept. 26) at Southern Indiana at 12 p.m.
