ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's soccer team concludes its three match homestand hosting No. 15 McKendree on Friday (Sept. 17) evening at 5 p.m. and against Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday (Sept. 19) at 12 p.m. The Flyers are off to their best start to a season since 2013 when they opened the season 4-0-1.
Last Time Out – Lewis got a goal in the 80th minute from senior transfer
Faith Lewis (Corunna, Ind./DeKalb) to defeat Lindenwood 1-0 last Sunday.
Elisa Aguilar (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) intercepted a pass and played it ahead to Lewis who dribbled down the left side of the pitch and fired a shot towards goal that hit off the keeper's hands and went into the goal. Senior
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) recorded her seventh career shutout in the contest.
United Soccer Coaches Rankings – The Flyers are ranked 10th in this week's United Soccer Coaches Midwest Regional rankings. Lewis is one of five GLVC teams ranked in this week's Top 10. McKendree is ranked second, Missouri-St. Louis is sixth, Indianapolis is seventh and Southern Indiana is eighth.
Home Sweet Home – The Flyers are unbeaten in their last seven home contests dating back to this past March. They are 6-0-1 in that stretch.
About McKendree – The Bearcats enter Friday's contest with a record of 3-0-1 and are 1-0 in the GLVC after opening conference play with a 2-1 win at Southern Indiana. Emma Knoebel put McKendree in front with a goal in the 34th minute and Katie Spotanski scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 69th minute.
Knoebel leads the team in scoring with three goals and an assist for a total of seven points while five other players have tallied a goal. Mercedes King and Abby Tucker have split time in goal this season with each allowing a pair of goals.
About Missouri-St. Louis – The Tritons enter Friday's match at Illinois Springfield with a record of 3-1 and are 1-0 in conference play. They went 1-1 last week dropping their final non-conference game against Washburn 2-1 last Thursday and then opened league action with a 2-1 upset win over then 12th ranked UIndy. UMSL trailed 1-0 at halftime against the Greyhounds before scoring twice in the span of 12 minutes in the second half. Emma Sitton tied the game in the 50th minute and Jaycee Cotton scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute.
Cotton leads the team in scoring with four points scoring two goals while four players have a goal apiece. Brynne Qualley has played a majority of the minutes in goal and has a goals against average of 1.17 and has made 14 saves.
Series Stuff – McKendree leads the all-time series against Lewis 9-2 and has won six straight. This is the first meeting between the two sides in Romeoville since Sept. 30, 2016. The Flyers last win in the series was a 3-1 win at McKendree on Oct. 4, 2015.
The Flyers lead the series against Missouri-St. Louis 11-10-2 and are unbeaten against them in the last four meetings (3-0-1). The two teams last met on Feb. 26, 2021 and tied 0-0 at the Lou Fusz Soccer Complex in St. Louis, Mo. Lewis is 6-4-1 against the Tritons in matches played in Romeoville.
Up Next – Lewis begins a three-game road trip next Friday at Indianapolis with kick-off scheduled for 4 p.m. (CDT). The Flyers will then head to Evansville, Ind., on Sunday to take on Southern Indiana at 2:30 p.m.
