ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's soccer team begins a three-game road trip this Friday (Sept. 24) against the 24th ranked Indianapolis Greyhounds at 4 p.m. (CDT) at Key Stadium in Indianapolis. The road swing continues on Sunday with a trip to Evansville, Ind., to take on Southern Indiana at 2:30 p.m.
The Flyers are off to their best start since 2013 and two wins this weekend would match the 6-0-1 start that the 2013 squad set to start a season. The best start to a season in school history came in 1997 when that team began the year with seven straight wins.
Last Time Out – Lewis went 1-0-1 last weekend playing to 0-0 double overtime draw against No. 15 McKendree last Friday and then defeated Missouri-St. Louis 1-0 on an own goal by the Tritons in the 83rd minute off a Flyer corner kick.
Goose Eggs – Lewis' defense has posted three consecutive shutouts heading into this weekend's games and haven't allowed a goal in 305 minutes overall dating back to a first half goal at Purdue Northwest on Sept. 4.
League Leaders – Senior goalkeeper
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) ranks second in the GLVC in shutouts with three is third in goals against average with a mark of 0.71 and has allowed three goals through the first five contests. She also ranks eighth in save percentage at .786.
Fifth year senior forward
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) is tied for fourth in the conference in assists with two, sixth in points per game with 1.20, tied for seventh in points with six and is tied for eighth in goals with two.
Rankings – The Flyers climbed four spots in this week's United Soccer Coaches Midwest Region rankings from 10th to sixth thanks to its performances last weekend. Lewis is one of four GLVC teams ranked in this week's poll. UIndy is third in the region followed by Lewis and McKendree and Drury who are seventh and eighth respectively.
About UIndy – The Greyhounds climbed back into the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll this at number 24 thanks toback-to-back wins over Southern Indiana and McKendree last weekend. The Hounds got a goal from Taylor Peck in the 70th minute to defeat the Screaming Eagles last Friday and then scored three times in the span of seven minutes to upset McKendree 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Kiki Sauceda, the team's leading scorer, had two goals and two assists last weekend for a total of eight points to claim her second GLVC Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season. She leads the team with six goals and has two assists for a total of 14 points on the seasons.
About Southern Indiana – The Screaming Eagles enter Friday's contest against Illinois Springfield with a mark of 2-2-1, 0-2 GLVC on the season and have dropped back-to-back one goal decisions against McKendree and Indianapolis.
USI has scored a total of four goals this season while conceding three. Jill DiTusa, Morgan Beyer, Avery Schone and Brenna Frommeit lead the team with a goal apiece. Maya Etienne has made four starts in goal making 14 saves with two shutouts and a goals against average of .824.
Series Stuff – The Greyhounds hold a 17-11 advantage in the series dating back to 1994 but Lewis has won seven of the last 10 matchups. Last season, UIndy defeated the Flyers 1-0 on a penalty kick with about 20 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Screaming Eagles lead the all-time series with the Flyers 16-5-4 dating back to 1994 and 5-2-3 in the last 10 meetings between the two sides. Last year, USI scored a pair of goals in the second half to defeat Lewis 2-0 at Lewis Stadium.
