Box Score Kansas City, Mo. - The Lewis University women's volleyball team played Rockhurst University on Nov. 8 at the Mason-Halpin Field House.
With the win from the Hawks, they advanced their record to 19-8 and a conference record of 10-1. The Flyers now sit at 14-12 and a conference record of 5-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trading points back and forth in the beginning of the first set, Lewis took the lead at 10-8 with two kills coming from Sarah Newberry (Fairfield, Ohio/Stephen T Badin). The Hawks came from behind and were able to flip the script and take the lead, 19-18. The Hawks never relinquished their lead and stole the opening frame, 25-21.
Down early in the second set, the Flyers had to battle from the beginning. With the help of back-to-back kills from Newberry and Ann Kelly Velikov (Orvault, France/C.E.N.S.), the Flyers were able to tie the set, 3-3. Still, the Hawks recovered and again used multiple scoring runs which ended the set at 25-17 and gave the hosts a 2-0 match lead.
The Hawks took charge in set three with a three-point lead. Despite an impressive four kill run from Newberry midway through the frame, the Hawks never gave up their lead the entirety of the set and took the victory at 25-21.
Newberry led the Flyers with 14 kills. Lily King (Channahon, Ill./Kent State) and Rachel Kaczorowski (Carpentersville, Ill./Harry D. Jacobs) both had a total of 15 assists. Holubar and Buxton each had eight digs. Lewis ended the match with a hitting percentage of .202 (40-16-119)
Sarah Pyle led the Hawks with a total of 16 kills and Molly Trachta had a total of 23 assists. Katie Vargo topped off 17 digs. Rockhurst ended the match with a hitting percentage of .342 (51-11-117).
MATCH NOTES
- Newberry has had 10 or more kills in a total of 11 matches this season.
- Despite the loss, Lewis has a 21-13 record against Rockhurst.
UP NEXT
The Flyers will take on Drury University on Nov. 14 at 6:00 pm at Neil Carey Arena. It will serve as the programs annual Rae Strong Foundation match.
