No. 15 Men's Volleyball Sweeps No. 13 Ohio State

Romeoville, Ill. - The No. 15 Lewis Men's Volleyball team tallied 11 aces compared to just five for The No. 13 Ohio State en route to their 3-0 win over the Buckeyes Thursday night at Neil Carey Arena.

With the win, the Flyers improved to 10-6 (3-3 MIVA) while the Buckeyes shifted to 9-5 (4-2 MIVA).

IMPACT PLAYERS
Cameron Hoying (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) paced the Flyers on the offensive side of the bal with 14 kills while Daniel Haber (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) chipped in 10 of his own. Diego Estrada (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Adianez) notched 35 assists to aid in the win. On the defensive side of the ball, Haber and Frederick Kreuger-Beer each notched three blocks with reigning MIVA Defensive Player of the Week Nico Paula (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Preparatory School) tying the team-high in digs with seven.

Shane Wetzel and Daniel Hurley each had seven kills with Wetzel tying the game high in digs with seven. Ohio State hit at a clip of .167 (27-15-72) compared to .385 (41-11-78) for Lewis.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flyers dominated the first set as they limited Ohio State to a -.120 (6-9-25) while hitting at a clip of .286 (11-5-21) to win, 25-15 and take a 1-0 match lead.

Down 13-11 midway through the second frame, the Flyers found a spark as a Buckeyes service error spurned a 6-0 run that gave Lewis the lead for good, 17-13.

Still, the Buckeyes did not go away as they began to chip away at the Lewis lead and a late 6-1 run, paced by kills from Wetzel and Aaron Grimm, tied the frame, 23-23. Despite the late push, the Flyers did not let the Buckeyes reclaim the lead as a Haber kill followed by an Ohio State error gave the Flyers a 25-23 set two win and 2-0 match lead.

Tied 6-6 in the final stanza, Lewis began to pull away as another Haber kill kicked-off a 6-2 spurt that moved Lewis ahead, 12-8. Both sides exchanged the next handful of scores but a 7-3 run gave the red and white breathing room late with a 22-16 advantage. Lewis kept Ohio State at bay and claimed the third frame, 25-20, to seal the 3-0 win.
