Swimming Teams Open Season with Meets at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis.--The Lewis University swimming teams opened the 2004-05 season with a pair of meets hosted by Carthage College Oct. 22-23.

On Friday, Oct. 22, Carthage held a double distance meet featuring the host Redmen, Lewis and Wheeling Jesuit. The meet was designed as a fun meet to begin the season. Accordingly, the shortest event was the 200 freestyle, and included events such as the 800 individual medley and 400 butterfly.

Carthage won the men's and women's meet with 58 and 63 points, respectively. Lewis' women finished third (33 points), while the men placed second (49 points).

The Flyer men's performance was highlighted by a victory in the 800 freestyle relay and the 400 butterfly. The relay team swam a 7:31.33 to beat its closest opponent by more than two seconds. Meanwhile, freshman Adam Brown won the 400 butterfly with a 4:33.82.

In addition, Adam Bidlack and Brown placed 2-3 in the 800 IM; Bidlack clocked a 9:20.72 edging out Brown who swam a 9:20.89.

For the women, Stephanie White-Olson recorded the team's top finish with a second place in the 400 breaststroke (5:33.71).

The following day, the same three teams participated in a double-dual. Lewis' men fell to Carthage by the thinnest of margins 92-91 and beat Wheeling Jesuit 100-69. The Flyer women lost to Carthage 144-60 and beat Wheeling Jesuit 93-91.

Bidlack recorded a pair of first-place finishes, earning wins in the 1000 freestyle (10:08.27) and 500 freestyle (4:55.66). Brown also registered a win in the 200 butterfly (2:04.04) and came in second to Bidlack in the 500 free (5:10.95).

Also for the men, Gaspar Flores (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:33.97.

Brittany Reetz and White-Olson were event winners for the Flyer women. Reetz swam a 55.65 in the 100 freestyle, while White-Olson notched a 2:34.81 in the 200 breaststroke.

Lewis will next be in action when it hosts Grand Valley State in the Flyers' first home dual meet of the season. Lewis will swim against its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival at 1 p.m. on Oct. 30.
