ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
The Lewis men's and women's swim teams opened the 2006-07 season by competing in a pair of meets over the weekend.
On Friday, the women went up against Division I powerhouse University of Toledo. On Saturday, the men and women competed at the Ashland Relays.
At Toledo, freshman Nicole Marano provided the Flyers' best individual finish with a first-place showing in the 100 yard freestyle. She completed the race in 55.65 to capture nine of the Flyers' 57 points for the meet. Other strong performances were turned in by Michelle Sliva and Jackie Olivares, who finished third and fourth respectively in the 500 freestyle, and Stephanie White-Olson in finished second in the 150 breaststroke.
"I was pleased with our efforts at Toledo," said head coach Steve Thompson. "Our splits were comparable to where they were at the conference meet last season. It's good to see our hard work has resulted in such fast times in the early going."
At the Ashland Relays, the Flyers swam against five conference schools, including Grand Valley State which is one of the top 10 programs in the country. Even though points were not kept at the meet, the Flyers proved to be a formidable conference foe.
The men's 300 backstroke relay team swam to a first-place finish in their race, with senior Michael Lapustin earning Lewis' first NCAA "B" cut of the season in that event.
"We showed the conference that we will compete and challenge them this season," said Thompson. "Our men were among the top in six of the nine relays, and the women showed that they will be competitive in conference."
Up next for the Flyers is a meet at Western Illinois on Oct. 20.
