Flyers Split at Western Illinois Dual Meet

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University men's swimmers took first place in nine of 11 events to earn a 124-81 team win over NCAA Division I Western Illinois University Friday in a dual meet. The Lewis women fell, 142-61.

Seniors Michael Lapustin and Steve O'Leary and freshman Jared Zimmer each turned in two first place finishes for the Flyer men. Lapustin swam fastest in the 50 freestyle (22.47) and the 200 backstroke (1:57.71). O'Leary took first place in the 200 IM (2:03.84) and the 200 breaststroke (2:18.12). Zimmer was quickest in the 500 freestyle (4:51.79) and the 1000 freestyle (10:01.17).

Senior Jevgenijs Pesins swam the 200 butterfly in 2:02.38, and freshman Adam Olszeski turned in a 1:47.78 in the 200 freestyle for two more first-place finishes. The men's 400 medley relay team of Lapustin, Pesins, O'Leary and sophomore Greg Marx swam to first with a time of 3:41.48.

For the women, senior Leigh Dodd provided the Flyers' only first-place finish with a 2:14.74 in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:14.74. The women did have six second-place efforts.

Senior Tristine Schmidt scored two seconds with a 5:36.06 in the 500 freestyle and an 11:27.47 in the 1000 freestyle. Senior Michelle Sliva came in second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:18.66. Junior Stephanie White-Olson swam a 2:29.03 in the 200 breaststoke for a second-place showing, and freshman Nicole Marano was second-fastest in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.42.

The women's 400 freestyle relay team of Schmidt, Sliva, sophomore Tracey Kueltzo and freshman Bridget Bettenhausen took second by clocking a 3:56.73.

Up next for the Flyers is the Eastern Illinois Invitational on Nov. 3-4.
