ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis women's soccer wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in their 4-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at the Lewis Multi-Purpose Athletic Complex. Their four goals is their most in a game since 2007.
The Flyers started the contest by scoring twice in the first 12 minutes. Junior
Fran Abate (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) knocked in a penalty kick at 7:43 for the first goal of the game and her third goal of the season. At 11:53 freshman
Susan Thomas (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) continued her impressive season with a goal. The tally was assisted by junior
Libby Cooper (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) (Batavia, Ill./Batavia/UW-Milwaukee).
Lewis made it 3-0 at halftime with a goal at 37:56. Senior
Allison Schieffer (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) scored the tally, her first of the season, with assists by freshman
Daniella DiGioia (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) and junior
Danielle Warner (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South).
Thomas concluded the scoring with a goal at 56:45. The goal was her fifth of the season and third of the weekend. Schieffer and senior
Jordyn McMahon (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) assisted on the goal.
The Flyers held a 30-11 edge in shots, including an 18-5 advantage in the first half. Lewis earned eight corner kicks while Kentucky Wesleyan had none.
“We did a good job today of keeping the ball and having some movement off the ball,” head coach
Chris Koenig said. “We worked pretty hard this week on possession in the offensive third and trying to create more chances.”
Sophomore
Arianna Nie (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) made five saves and freshman
Mara Bennett (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) made two saves to combine for the shutout.
Lewis improves to 5-5-1 (5-4-1 GLVC). Kentucky Wesleyan falls to 1-9 (1-9 GLVC).
The Flyers are at home next weekend. First is a 5 p.m. contest with Rockhust on Friday. GLVC newcomer William Jewell comes to town on Sunday for a noon start.
