Kissimmee, Fla. - The six-game winning streak for the No. 24 Lewis University softball team came to an end on Saturday (March 5) morning, as Concordia (MN) recorded three home runs on their way to the 6-4 non-conference victory over the Flyers in the opening day of Rebel Games action.
The Golden Bears had built a 5-0 lead over Lewis, but as in recent games, the Flyers proved that they weren't out of the contest. Lewis scored four unanswered runs to bring the score to 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning and had runners at first and third with no outs.
Lewis, however, was unable to capitalize and Concordia tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning to secure the win.
"It was a valiant comeback by our team and we had all the confidence in the world that we could come back," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "We almost did it, but just fell short."
With the win, Concordia (MN) improves to 5-2, while the Flyers are now 8-2 on the campaign.
Lewis freshman pitcher Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) took the loss for the Flyers, dropping to 3-2 on the season. Moseley allowed 11 hits and struck out two batters in six innings of work.
Moseley's classmate Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) topped the Flyers offensively as she went 2-for-3 with her first collegiate homer - a two-run shot. Lewis sophomore outfielder Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while junior third baseman Traci Freitag (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) collected two hits in the loss.
