Flyers Cage Hawks, 3-0

Lewis climbs back to .500

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - David Kelnhofer and Drew Pickering combined for 20 kills as the Lewis Flyers swept the Quincy Hawks 30-26, 30-22 and 30-26, Friday night in Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers improved to 5-5 (2-3 MIVA), while the Hawks dropped to 6-9 (1-4 MIVA).

Kelnhofer tallied 10 kills on 16 attempts, hitting .563, and Pickering also had 10 kills along with three of the team's seven service aces, four digs and three blocks. Craig Boller added seven kills on nine attempts with no errors to hit a match-high .778. Nick Perakes posted a match-high 13 digs, while Jordan Vidovic notched 34 assists and five blocks.

The Flyers trailed 14-10 in the third game before going on a 6-1 rally to grab a 16-15 advantage. A kill by Quincy's Branden Been knotted the score 16-16, and then he collected another kill, a service ace and a solo block over the next several rallies to help put the Hawks in front 23-21.

Quincy's lead didn't last, as three Hawks' errors over the next four exchanges opened the door for the Flyers. Lewis took the lead for good at 25-24 when Alex Vigansky and Pickering combined on a block. Another block by Vigansky, a couple of Pickering kills and a service ace on match-point by Vidovic sealed the win for the Flyers.

The Flyers out-hit Quincy .321 to .226 in the second game, as the Hawks committed seven hitting and five service errors including two hitting miscues to give the Flyers their final two points.

Errors hurt Quincy in game one as well, with the Flyers claiming victory thanks to consecutive errors by the Hawks. The Flyers led for the whole game, but never by more than three points until the two Quincy errors at the end.

Been paced the Hawks with a match-high 14 kills, while Jon Moreno and Ryan Ehnert each added eight. Mike Contee had a team-best eight digs.

Lewis out-hit Quincy .350 to .268, and it held a 10-7 edge in team blocks.

The Flyers play again Saturday night when they host California Baptist at 7 pm.
