ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Behind a .327 to .165 hitting percentage advantage, the 15th ranked Lewis men's volleyball team earned a 3-2 (25-15, 25-13, 21-25, 20-25, 15-10) decision over Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foe Quincy on Thursday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
Lewis also held a 12.0 to 5.0 edge in blocks with the Flyers' middle hitters doing most of the damage. Junior #Aaron Flick# (North Ridgeville, Ohio / St. Edward) recorded six blocks (one solo) while classmate #Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice)# (Evergreen Park, Ill. / Brother Rice) totaled five (one solo). Gallik was also a force offensively. He had 13 kills on 17 attacks with one error for .706 hitting percentage.
“Matt was great offensively and put up a solid block too,” head coach #Dan Friend# said. “he and Aaron both did well on both ends of the court.”
Offensively, Gallik was joined by senior #Brian Muesenfechter (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers)#'s (St. Louis, Mo. / Christian Brothers) nine kills and three aces. Sophomore #Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North)# (Downers Grove, Ill. / Downers Grove North) totaled a match-high 18 kills.
Lewis cruised to victories in the first two sets. The Flyers had a 9-0 stretch in the opening frame and then started the second set on a 5-0 run.
Quincy rallied to win the next two sets and force a fifth game. Quincy never held a lead in the final set. A Muesenfechter ace gave Lewis their first two-point advantage at 5-3. The difference came on a four-point push by the Flyers to make the score 10-5. The Flyers' 15th point was scored on a solo block by Petty.
“We used some different lineups tonight to work on some things,” Friend said. “Some things worked and some didn't.”
Quincy falls to 18-10 (0-6 MIVA). Lewis improves to 16-9 (4-4 MIVA). The Flyers are back in action on Saturday against No. 7 Ohio State. The home contest starts at 7 p.m. and will be aired live on Lakeshore Public Television.
