PHOENIX – Sophomore
Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) recorded 20 kills and four aces to help No. 15 Lewis men's volleyball to a 25-17, 25-22, 25-22 sweep of Grand Canyon on Friday evening. The Flyers improve to 18-10 and 6-5 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association with the win.
Petty helped Lewis out-hit the Antelopes .386 to .179. Lewis also held a 13.5 to 7.0 blocking advantage.
“Jay carried the load for us tonight offensively,” head coach
Dan Friend said. “We worked on blocking out of system in practice this week and we did a good job of that tonight.”

Carter Cassell (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon) (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon) recorded a game-high 26 assists after starter
BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) left the game with a twisted an ankle.
“Carter came in and settled things down and was able to finish off the match,” Friend said.
Lewis finished the first set on a 5-0 run. Petty had three aces in the push. Lewis led by just one at 21-20 in the second set when the Flyers scored three straight points. Petty had a kill and Cassell recorded an ace in the run. Set three was tied as late as point 18; that is when Petty recorded two kills to give Lewis the lead for good.
Grand Canyon falls to 8-22 (0-11 MIVA). The Flyers and Antelopes will play again on Saturday. First serve is set for 6 p.m. local time, a change from the previously posted 7 p.m. local start.
