Lewis Men's Tennis Cruises Past Huntington, 8-1

Lapimaa extends singles winning streak to 21 matches; Pestinger and Irdoja both win two matches on 'Senior Day'

Three different Lewis University men's tennis players donned the red and white for the final time against Huntington on Saturday (Apr. 30) afternoon, but their teammates played as if it were their last collegiate match ever, as the Flyers cruised to the 8-1 win over the Foresters at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex.  

Redshirt-juniors Tonis Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare Kool) (Tallin, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare) and Lorenz Pestinger (Bad Homburg, Germany/Humboldtschule) (Bad Homburg, Germany/Humboldtschule/Missouri Valley) and graduate student Jonathan Teune (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South/Taylor University) all played their final match as a Flyer on Saturday, combining for five wins.

"Today was 'Senior Day' and it was great to end the season with a win," Lewis head men's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "We were fortunate to have Tonis, Lorenz and Jon here as student-athletes.

"All of them will be greatly missed."

With the win, Lewis concludes the season with a record of 12-5, while Huntington falls to 13-3.

Irdoja paired up with junior Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) (Tallin, Estonia/Audentese) for the 8-6 win over Vladislav Khudizy and Augusto Velez at No. 1 doubles. He would later claim the 6-2, 7-6 win over Velez at No. 2 singles. Lapimaa extended his singles winning-streak to 21 matches with the 6-2, 2-6, 11-9 win over Khudizy at No. 1 singles.

Pestinger teamed up with junior Michael Wojnarowski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards/Moraine Valley C.C.) for the 8-3 triumph over Jose Hungria and Jameel Brenneman at No. 2 doubles. Pestinger later upended Brenneman at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-0). Wojnarowski took hom the 6-3, 6-1 win over Hungria at No. 3 singles.

Teune matched up with sophomore Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) for the 8-0 whitewash over Martin Vivas and Jonathan Brenneman at No. 3 doubles. Hardacre downed Vivas, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
