St. Cloud, Minn. -
The Lewis University softball team found out that they could compete with some of the nation's best competition on Saturday (Feb. 25), but the Flyers fell short in their upset bid, as No. 7 Augustana (S.D.) claimed the 3-2 non-conference victory at the Husky Dome Classic, hosted by St. Cloud State.

Lewis first baseman Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) collected both of the Flyers' RBI, while juniors Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and freshman Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) each roped a pair of base hits.

"As much as I hate to lose, the way we played today put a smile on my face," Lewis head softball coach #George DiMatteo said. "If we play like this, or anywhere close to this, we're going to win a lot of games this year.

"We showed how good we could be and we can be as good as any team in our region."

With the victory, Augustana improves to 6-1 on the season, while the Flyers are now 2-6 on the campaign.

It was a scoreless game for four innings, before Augustana third baseman Lindsay Spanton (2-for-4, 2 RBI, run) connected for a two-run homer off of Flyer pitcher Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) (Kenosa, Wis./Harborside) in the top of the fifth inning.

Lewis answered in the bottom half of the frame on a RBI groundout by Moseley, to narrow Augustana's advantage to 2-1.

Augustana tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, as second baseman Kelsey Kalkman  (2-for-4, RBI) plated Spanton with a RBI single to extend the Vikings' lead to 3-1.

The Flyers responded in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-out, RBI double by Moseley to cut Augie's lead to 3-2, but Vikings pitcher Ashley Meyer induced a Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris) (Morris, Ill./Morris) ground out to end the game.

Brems (1-2) took the complete-game loss for the Flyers, as she surrendered three runs and eight hits while striking out six batters. Meyer (2-1) claimed the complete-game win for the Vikings, as she allowed two runs and nine hits while fanning nine batters.

Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 26), as the Flyers take on St. Cloud State. First pitch is slated for 8 a.m.
