ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Junior
Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) scored three runs in each game of Lewis softball's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of Rockhurst on Saturday (March 10) morning at the Lewis Softball Field. The Flyers took the opener 8-3 and the second contest 7-4.
Sophomore
Jessica Rourke (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport), hitting behind Hefler in both games, took advantage of having Hefler on base. Rourke finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in the first game. She went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in game two.
“Jayme brings a spark every game,” Lewis head softball coach
George DiMatteo said. “Jessica was great today with several clutch hits.”
The Flyers didn't trail in either game. Lewis scored two runs in each of the first two innings in game one. Rockhurst made it 4-3 in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. It could have been worse though. Freshman
Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) struckout back-to-back batters with runners on second and third to end the frame.
Brems would go to finish the game's final three innings and earn her first of two saves on the day. Senior
Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) started in the circle and went 4.0 innings. She allowed four hits and two runs (one earned). Habel is now 2-4 on the year.
The Flyers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. Hefler had an RBI single and Rourke a two RBI double in the frame.
Kayla Hoyer (1-7) took the loss for Rockhurst.
Lewis was the first on the board in game two with three runs in the second inning. Rourke had a two-out two RBI single in the inning. Lewis added three more in the fourth thanks mostly to a two RBI double by sophomore
Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean).
The speedy Hefler scored a run all by herself in the sixth. She singled on a bunt, stole second, stole third and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher on the steal of third. It helped provide Lewis some insurance as they entered the seventh leading 7-3. Rockhurst plated one run and loaded the bases with one out before Brems induced a foul out and a lineout back to herself to end the game.
Brems picked up the save thanks to allowing one run on three hits in 2.1 innings. Fellow freshman
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) picked up the win to improve to 3-2. She allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits in 4.2 innings. Megan Holm took the loss for Rockhurst. Her record drops to 1-5.
“We have played better and will play better, but it was great to be back at home in front of a great crowd and get two wins,” DiMatteo said.
Rockhurst falls to 6-20 (2-8 GLVC) while Lewis improves to 8-11 (2-4 GLVC). The Flyers host William Jewell on Sunday in a GLVC doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
