No. 7 Lewis Men's Volleyball Too Much For No. 8 Long Beach State, 3-1

Flyers finish 1-1 at the Active Ankle Classic

LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 7 Lewis men's volleyball defeated their third Mountain Pacific Sports Federation school of the season on Saturday (March 10) by topping No. 8 Long Beach State 3-1 (13-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20). The win is Lewis' second over Long Beach State in as many seasons.
 
Last year junior Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) recorded 21 kills in the Flyers' victory at The Pyramid. On Saturday he had a match-high 17 while adding seven digs and a pair of aces.
 
Long Beach State led from start to finish in the first set. The second set was back and forth until a 3-0 run gave Lewis a 14-11 lead. Lewis never trailed again in the frame.
 
Lewis survived a 7-0 Long Beach State run in the middle of the third stanza. It gave Long Beach State an 18-16 lead. The Flyers fought back and took the lead again at 21-20. Petty then recorded kills for points 24 and 25 to put Lewis up 2-1 in the match.
 
The 49ers held just one lead in the fourth set, at 17-16. It was tied at 20 before the Flyers finished the match on a 5-0 spurt. Three of the five points came via Petty kills.
 
The match featured 24 ties and 11 lead changes.
 
Lewis sophomore setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) totaled 48 assists. Junior libero Eric Varney (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park) (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park/Moorpark) had a match-high nine digs.
 
The 49ers are now 10-9. The Flyers improve to 15-4. Lewis heads back home to Romeoville for a busy upcoming week. Lewis hosts King on Tuesday, Limestone on Friday and Lindenwood on Saturday. All three matches have a 7 p.m. first serve.
