No. 6 Lewis Men's Volleyball Tops Lindenwood In Three

Flyers win fourth consecutive contest

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The luck of the Irish was on the side of No. 6 Lewis men's volleyball as they swept Lindenwood 25-19, 25-20, 25-16 in a non-conference matchup on Saturday (March 17) evening. The win, in front of a mostly green-clad crowd, gives the Flyers a perfect 10-0 record at home this season.
 
The Flyers forced Lindenwood into a timeout in set one after Lewis took a 12-6 lead. The Lions then cut Lewis' lead to 17-14. That is the closest Lindenwood would get as the Flyers won the set 25-19. Freshman Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) notched a set-high six kills.
 
The Flyers again were able to jump out to a lead in the second set as they took a 10-4 advantage. A Kill by freshman James Hofmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop McNicholas) (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop McNicholas) on match point gave the Flyers the win. Lewis led the entire set.  
 
Lewis dominated the third set, outhitting Lindenwood .417 to .080. Freshman Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) came off the bench to record six kills on nine attempts in the frame.
 
The Flyers were led by Powell with 10 kills, followed by Fitterer with six. Sophomore setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) added 23 assists in two sets of action. Nine Flyers recorded a kill during the contest.
 
“From last night's match going into tonight we talked about things we wanted to improve on from our energy level to service pressure and we came out and were on top of it,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. “We started to change the lineup in games two and three and those guys did some nice things.”

Lindenwood never held a lead in the contest.
 
Lewis out-hit the Lions .366 to .133. Lindenwood falls to 15-9. With the win Lewis improves to 18-4 on the season. Saturday's contest was the final non-conference match of the year for the Flyers. The next matchup for the Flyers is against IPFW on Friday (March 23). First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
