Box Score Owensboro, Ky. – The Lewis University women's soccer team had four different goal scorers in their 6-1 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan Friday (Sept. 21) at Robert “Bullet” Wilson Field at Steele Stadium. The Flyers improve to 5-2 on the season and 3-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Panthers fall to 0-6 on the season, 0-5 in the GLVC.

“I thought we played very well tonight against a young team,” Lewis head women's soccer coach Chris Koenig said. “I was very happy how we moved the ball and that our decision making was better.”

Jessica Saffell (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) got the Flyers on the board first by putting a  Fran Abate (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) pass past the Panthers starting goalkeeper Kathryn Dishion. Lauren Bowles (Libertyville, Ill./Carmel Catholic) (Libertyville, Ill./Carmel Catholic) added an unassisted goal for the Flyers.

Bowles then assisted on Lewis' third goal of the first half, pushing a pass up to Susan Thomas (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) (Algonguin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) for the goal. Thomas aided the fourth Flyer's goal of the half, passing ahead to Saffell to put the ball in the net.

“A lot of our goals came through attacks,” Koenig said. “(The team) allowed the opportunities to present themselves.”

In the second half, Saffell sent a pass up to Danielle Warner (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) for her to score on back-up Panther goalkeeper Alissa Shultz. Thomas added her second goal of the game late, getting a pass from Greccia Miranda (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central).

Lewis goalkeeper Mara Bennett (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) allowed one Kentucky Wesleyan goal in the first half, but the Flyers defense was able to keep the Panthers offensive runs at bay the rest of the game.

Lewis women's soccer is back in GLVC action on Sunday (Sept 23) at Southern Indiana. First kick is set for 2:30 PM at Strassweg Field.
