Romeoville, Ill. – Lewis University redshirt junior outside hitter
Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) collected a career-high 25 kills and 10 digs in the women's volleyball team's 3-1 (27-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-13) victory over No. 22 Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday (Nov. 2) at Neil Carey Arena.
Earlier in the day, the Flyers fell to Rockhurst, 3-0 (32-30, 25-20, 35-20) in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
With the split, Lewis moves to 17-8 on the season and 10-2 in GLVC action. Rockhurst moves to 20-5 for the year and 10-2 in league play. Wheeling Jesuit falls to 24-5 on the year.
"As a team, this squad is able to do a good job mentally pushing forward after a tough loss earlier in the day," Lewis head women's volleyball coach
Lorelee Smith said. "Kim was awesome all day.
"She was able to change up her tempo and where she placed the ball in both matches."
In the nightcap, Lewis sophomore outside hitter
Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) picked up her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 18 digs. Redshirt sophomore right side hitter
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) added 14 kills while junior setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) dished out 50 assists. Redshirt freshman
Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) dug a career-high 26 balls for the Flyers.
Wheeling Jesuit's offense was led by Jenna Pew's triple double with 17 kills, 19 assists and 11 digs. Kayce Krucki picked up 11 kills and 17 digs while Madison Strall had 28 assists.
Against Rockhurst, Vertin paced the Flyers with 18 kills and 10 digs with three total blocks. Barea had 33 assists and 15 digs while Yuede dug 23 balls for the Flyers.
Rockhurst's offensive tempo was kept high by Morgan Rietzke who had 12 kills and 10 digs while Alyssa Arnold had 19 digs and 12 kills. Katie Loescher had 12 kills while Whitney Kostal had 37 assists.
The Flyers return to Neil Carey Arena to host William Jewell on Sunday (Nov. 3) with first serve at 2 PM.
