Lewis Women’s Volleyball Falls In Five To No. 24 Truman State

Four Flyers collected double-figure kills in the match

Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University women's volleyball fell in a thrilling five-set (24-26, 25-21, 25-27, 25-19, 15-13) match to No. 24 Truman State in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament semi-final contest on Saturday (Nov. 23) at Neil Carey Arena.
 
The Flyers move to 24-9 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 23-10 on the year. Truman State will play the University of Indianapolis on Sunday (Nov. 24) at Neil Carey Arena, in the finals of GLVC Championship Tournament with first serve at 2 PM.
 
Lewis redshirt junior outside hitter Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) picked up 24 kills, 19 digs and three block assists while redshirt sophomore right side hitter Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) tallied 17 putaways, 11 digs and three block assists.
 
Sophomore outside Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) had 18 digs and 12 putaways for the Flyers while fellow sophomore middle hitter Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) had 10 kills and three total blocks. Junior setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) dished out 53 assists, had 14 digs and four kills while redshirt freshman libero Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) had a career-high 30 digs.
 
"We were really happy to have four players with double figure kills tonight," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. "As the season goes along, we've developed more people who can put the ball away, which has been a huge goal."
 
Despite dropping the fourth set, the Flyers took a hold of the momentum to start the fifth game. Lewis went up 11-7, forcing Truman State to burn both timeouts early as Parsons had two kills and an ace to lead the Flyers' offense during the run. The tide turned as Lewis committed three errors to spur Truman State to go on an 8-2 run to close out the set and take the match.
 
In the third set the Flyers hit a match-high .333, collecting 19 kills with two errors on 51 attempts while holding the Bulldogs to a .278 hitting percentage (20 K, 5 E, 54 TA). Vertin collected eight kills in the game while Davito added five putaways for the Flyers.
 
Truman was led by Ali Patterson's 23 kills while Allie Brak had 18 putaways and 13 digs. The Bulldogs' Abby Heise had 18 kills, while setter Meghan Zimmerman had 56 assists and 14 digs. TSU libero Abby Moser had a team-high 26 digs.
 
The Flyers will find out where they will play in the NCAA Tournament on Monday (Nov. 25) at 7:30 ET as NCAA.com will air the Women's Volleyball Tournament selection show.
