Auburndale, Fla. – The Lewis University baseball team wrapped up their annual spring Florida trip with a 2-1 loss to No. 10 Minnesota State-Mankato in 11 innings on Saturday (March 9) at Lake Myrtle Park.
The Flyers fall to 6-2 on the season while the Mavericks also move to a 6-2 record.
“Today was a really good college baseball game,” Lewis head coach
Tim McDonough said. “At the end they got the hit. We had our opportunities but didn't cash them in.”
After the Mavericks scored first in the bottom of the fifth inning, junior
Jake Murray (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) evened the game with a solo home run in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the 11
th inning, the Mavericks' Todd Standish led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and was hit in for the victory.
Flyer starter senior
Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) threw six and a third innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out five and walking two batters. Sophomore
Phil Warner (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) tossed two and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief, striking out three and walking one. Senior
Derek Thomas (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) took the loss as he pitched one and a third innings, giving up one run on three hits and struck out one.

Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) went 2-for-5 with a triple while redshirt junior
Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) collected two hits in five at-bats. Junior
Alex Slaby (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport West) went 2-for-3 and picked up a stolen base in the game.
The Flyers return to Romeoville to open the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference slate, when the squad hosts Missouri-St. Louis for a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday (March 16) and Sunday (March 17) at Brennan Field. First pitch is set for 12 PM both days.
