St. Charles, Mo. – The No. 7 Lewis University men's volleyball team suffered their second Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association loss of the season at the hands of Lindenwood, 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 26-24) on Friday (March 22) at Hyland Arena.
 
The Flyers move to 16-7 on the season and 8-2 in conference play while the Lions improve to 17-8 on the year and 3-5 in the MIVA.
 
“They out worked us,” Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. “They out served and out passed us.”
 
Sophomore opposite Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) paced the Flyers with 20 kills and 10 digs, as well as four block assists. Redshirt senior outside hitter Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove) earned 10 kills, one service ace and six digs while redshirt junior setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) earned 39 assists in the contest.
 
In the first set, the Flyers used three mini runs to tie the set at 19-all, capitalizing on a Lindenwood attack error. The Lions scored the next two points but Fitterer earned two kills to tie the set at 22-all. Fitterer again got a kill to get the Flyers within one, at 24-23, but the Lions got the set win on a service error by the Flyers.
 
Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) picked up three straight kills to help the Flyers take an 11-8 lead in the second set. Lindenwood answered with a four-point run to tie the set at 15-all, as the Lions picked up two service aces and Colin Hackworth and Michael Adams earned a kill each in the run. After Lindenwood used another four-point swing to take a 21-19 lead, Boldog picked up a big block and fed Fitterer for his eighth kill of the set to tie the set at 21-all. The Lions closed out the set earning four of the last six points on kills by Hackworth and Scott Siwicki and two Lewis errors.
 
In the third set, the Flyers put together a five-point swing to take a 15-10 lead. Fitterer and Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) picked up kills while sophomore outside hitter Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) earned back-to-back service aces as Lewis capitalized on a Lindenwood error. The Lions used two three-point runs late to tie the set and then win the match in three sets.
 
Lewis stays on the road in MIVA action, heading to Quincy, Ill., to take on the Quincy Hawks on Saturday (March 23) at 7 PM.
