Lewis Softball Splits On Final Day Of Florida Trip

Flyers win regional game against Hillsdale (4-0), but lose in nightcap to Dowling (4-0).

The Lewis University softball team split their final two contests of their Spring Break trip on Thursday (March 7), as the Flyers earned a 4-0 regional victory over Hillsdale, but dropped a 4-0 decision in the nightcap to Dowling at the National Training Center.

With the split, Lewis is now 3-3 on the season, while Hillsdale is 0-1 and Dowling improves to 6-1 on the campaign.

In the opener against Hillsdale, Lewis sophomore pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) tossed a complete-game, six-hitter to earn her second victory of the season. Bowler (2-2) struck out nine batters in seven innings pitched. Senior catcher Alexis Munaco (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) provided the deciding blow for the Flyers with a two-run double in the third inning.

Munaco went 2-for-3 on the afternoon, while sophomores Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) and Frankie Rys (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist) each added two hits in the victory.

In the nightcap, Lewis sophomore pitcher Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) was touched for four runs and nine hits in six innings pitched. Brems (1-1) struck out five batters in the loss. Lewis senior shortstop Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and freshman designated player Alexis Funk (Dyer, Ind./Marian Catholic) garnered two hits apiece to lead the Flyers offensively.

Lewis returns to action on Saturday (March 16), as the Flyers welcome Quincy to the Lewis Softball Field for a 12 PM doubleheader.
