Lebanon, Ill. -
The Lewis University softball team, led by sophomore designated player Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) and senior shorstop Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) (Chicago, Ill./Marist) pounded out 24 hits off of the McKendree pitching staff en route to the 10-0 (6 inn.), 4-3 doubleheader sweep over the host Bearcats at Bearcat Field on Sunday (Apr. 14) afternoon.

Ullrich and Vucsko batted a combined .571 with two home runs, nine RBI and five runs scored. Ullrich went 5-for-7 with a home run and three RBI, while Vucsko went 3-for-7 with a long ball and six RBI. Senior center fielder Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) added four hits and scored two runs for the Flyers.

"Our bats continued to come alive," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "Our seniors, along with Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North), all had great days at the plate."

DiMatteo was pleased with the fact that his Flyers were able to earn four road victories in the always tough GLVC.

"I strongly believe that our team always plays better on the road because there are less distractions and we are more focused," DiMatteo said.

With the sweep, Lewis improves to 16-10 overall and 11-5 in GLVC action, while the host Bearcats are now 9-21 on the campaign and 7-16 in conference play.

Vucsko was the dominant force for the Flyers in the opener, as she collected all six of her career-best RBI in the first game. The Chicago, Ill., native went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and roped a three-run homer. The six RBI is the most by a Flyer player since Mallory Paine (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) had seven against Kentucky Wesleyan in 2008.

Hefler was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored in the opener, while Ullrich went 2-for-3 with two RBI, including a solo home run. Lewis senior right fielder Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris) (Morris, Ill./Morris) went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored for the Flyers.

Lewis sophomore pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) earned the complete-game shutout victory for the Flyers. Bowler (9-5) allowed three hits and struck out five batters in six innings of work. Her counterpart Kelsie Stoszkus (3-10) took the loss for the Bearcats, surrendering five runs and six hits in two innings pitched.

In the nightcap, Lewis took advantage of three McK errors that led to three unearned runs for the Flyers. Ullrich went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored to lead the Flyers, while senior catcher Alexis Munaco (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) and junior first baseman Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) each had two hits and a RBI for Lewis.

Lewis starting pitcher Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) went the distance to improve to 7-5 on the campaign. Brems scattered three runs and eight hits, while fanning eight batters. She got out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning, as she induced Morgan Schulte into a game-ending fly out with the bases loaded.

McKendree starting pitcher Taylor Barnouski dropped to 1-4 on the season, as she gave up four runs - one earned - and 10 hits with two strikeouts.

The Flyers return to action on Tuesday (Apr. 16), as they welcome Ferris State to the Lewis Softball Field for a 2 PM regional doubleheader.
