Romeoville, Ill. -
For the first time in over 15 years, the Lewis University softball team has defeated the No. 1 team in the nation, as the Flyers, behind a no-hitter from sophomore pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) (Lockport, Ill./Lockport), earned the 2-0 win over Indianapolis in the opening game of their Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 27) afternoon.

The Greyhounds bounced back in the nightcap for the 7-3 win over the Flyers, behind two home runs and four RBI from designated player Taylor Russell.

With the split, Lewis is now 25-13 overall and 19-7 in GLVC action, while the visiting Greyhounds are now 46-4 on the season and 26-2 in conference play.

The win over the No. 1 Greyhounds was the first time the Flyers had beaten the top-ranked team in the nation since a 2-1, 3-2 doubleheader sweep of UW-Parkside on April 2, 1997. It is also the first no-hitter by a Flyer pitcher since Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) threw a nine-inning, no-no in a 3-0 win over Bellarmine on May 1, 2011.

"From the top to the bottom of the bottom of their line-up, Indianapolis has no weaknesses and they have great pitching," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) pitched a magnificent game. I don't know what more you can say about her performance today.

"It was a good day," DiMatteo continued. "Any time you can beat Indianapolis at home, or on the road, it's quite an accomplishment."

In seven innings of work, Bowler (13-7) struck out six batters and stranded seven Greyhound runners on the base paths.

The Flyers scored the first run of the day on a RBI single by freshman catcher Kimmy Teats (Erie, Ill./Erie-Prophetstown) (Erie, Ill./Erie-Prophetstown) in the fourth inning. Lewis tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning on a throwring error by UIndy third baseman Kelsey Rummel.

UIndy starting pitcher Jennifer DeMotte (22-1) was tagged with her first loss of the season, allowing two runs - one earned - and five hits while striking out six batters in five innings.

The Greyhounds responded with force in the nightcap, as they touched Lewis sophomore pitcher Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) for three home runs, which accounted for all seven runs. Sophomore designated player Taylor Russell went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI, while senior first baseman Bailey Wittenauer had a three-run homer for the Greyhounds.

Brems, who had a two-run double at the plate for Lewis, had her seven-game winning streak come to an end in the circle. Brems (12-6) allowed seven runs and seven hits in seven innings, while striking out nine batters.

Lewis senior shortstop Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) (Chicago, Ill./Marist) led Lewis offensively with two hits.

UIndy starting pitcher Morgan Foley (24-3) earned the complete-game win for the Greyhounds, allowing three runs and five hits while striking out 10 Flyer battters.

Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Apr. 28) for 'Senior Day', as the Flyers welcome Saint Joseph's to the Lewis Softball Field for a 12 PM doubleheader.
